Cinquefoil,
Other Names: Five Fingers, Five-Finger Blossom, Five-finger grass, Sunkfield, Synkefoyle, Common Cinquefoil, Creeping Cinquefoil, Oldfield Cinquefoil
Folklore It was an ingredient in many spells in the Middle Ages, and was particularly used as a magic herb in love potions. In an old recipe called 'Witches' Ointment' the juice of Five-leaf Grass, smallage and wolfsbane is mixed with the fat of children dug up from their graves and added to fine wheat flour.
This beautiful and unusual plant is a perennial with a liking for wet places, including boggy lake-margins and wet, peaty meadows. The reddish, star-shaped flowers grow in loose forked clusters at the top of the stems which are upright, with alternating five- or seven-lobed leaves.
The whole of the plant has a deep magenta tinge, and this is particularly intense in the flowers. The colour makes it a welcome addition to the vegetation around and in the margins of a pond.

Crocosmia
Crocosmia
When planting Crocosmia, always plant the corms at least 3" ( preferably 4" for the bigger corms, such as Paniculata ) below soil level. The reason for this being, the hardest frosts only penetrate 3" or 4" below the ground, so your corms will not be affected. A dressing of a good general fertilizer (Fish Blood & Bone) is recommended in early Spring. Normally, once plants are established additional watering other than that supplied by rainfall is not required. once flowering is finished, cut back the stems, but leave the leaves on even after they have died back. This will make good insulation against frost in the winter months.
