Nepeta

Nepeta, or catmint, is a member of the mint family. It is an extremely easy growing plant with few pests or problems. The billowing foliage is topped with spikes of flowers in early summer with repeat blooms throughout the season. Certain varieties are very attractive to cats, both as a living plant and dried. The lavender-blue varieties are often used as a substitute for lavender plants, where lavender is not particularly hardy.

Many of the newer varieties of nepeta are sterile, producing no viable seeds. This is a plus if you don’t like the weedy, self-seeding habit of older nepeta varieties, but it means you will need to either buy plants or make plants from divisions or cuttings.

Maintenance:

Most Nepetas will rebloom if sheared back after their initial flowering. Some won’t provide much of a second show, but their foliage will be refreshed and tidied by the shearing. Division is not a requirement, but if you’d like more plants, Nepeta responds well to division in the spring.

Problems & Pests:

Problems with Nepeta are very rare.

Nepeta has slightly aromatic grey-green foliage that has a delicate, lacy appearance. The flowers can be white, pink or lavender-blue, and bloom on long spikes. Nepeta has a somewhat sprawling growth habit, making it a nice plant for edges and along paths. However there are a few tall growing varieties, like ‘Six Hills Giant’, with a more upright habit. As with many scented, grey foliage plants, Nepeta is deer resistant.

Nepeta is one of those plants that thrives on neglect. Too much fertilizer will only make it grow lots of flimsy foliage. A lean soil and somewhat dry growing conditions will encourage both flowers and scent.

 Polygonum

better known as Chinese knotweed or Flowery knotweed,

Foliage: Blue-Green

sometimes called a noxious weed or invasive plant
This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds
Flowers are fragrant
Average Water Needs; Water regularly; do not overwater
Propagation Methods:
From herbaceous stem cuttings
From seed; direct sow outdoors in fall

Harvesting the roots of Chinese Knotweed will get rid of the plant. You may have to harvest them for more than one year to erradicate it totally.

Chinese Knotweed is used as an herbal medicinal in China, and it is named He Shou Wu (processed root) or Sheng He Shou Wu (fresh, unprocessed root)

9 to 30 grams of the freshl root can be boiled in water to make a tea. This tea may be used as a laxative, or to treat carbuncles, boils, or other toxic swellings.

Processing the root by cooking it with yellow rice wine and black bean juice makes to root more useful for nourishing the body. 9 to 30 gram doses of He Shou Wu are used in combination with other herbs to maintain youth.

He Shou Wu is one of the main herbs in a formula called qi bao mei ran dan... loosely translated, that means "seven-treasure pill for beautiful whiskers". The formula is said to restore gray hair to its youthful color, and prevent premature aging.

 Pulmonaria

Pulmonarias can take up a lot of room in a relatively short time and make excellent ground-cover plants. Moisture-retentive soil in semi-shade suits them best.

grow easily from root cuttings. For a good crop of young plants in spring, try placing short 7.5cm (3in) sections of root into a seed tray and covering with potting compost.

Pulmonarias are a fine group of plants, they provide masses of flowers in Spring, with blue, red, purple, pink and white forms available. Pulmonaria are native to Europe including the UK which means they thrive in british gardens. Associating well with Hellebores, snowdrops, Cyclamen, Tiarella and Erythronium. Many pulmonaria have very good foliage well marked even fully silvered leaves providing a lovely contrast to summer flowering plants such as hardy geraniums.

Pulmonaria is a member of the forget-me-not family, Boraginaceae. Family characteristics include roughened or textured leaves and flower buds that are produced in tight whorls, uncurling as they open. Many species possess the unusual ability to waver in colour between pink and blue.

The plantain-shaped leaves persist deep into winter and range in colour from plain green, through a whole host of spots and stipples. The range of flower colourings is vast, from dazzling white through low-key shades of dusky pinks to a full range of blues.

Moisture-retentive soil in semi-shade suits them best.
