JUNE
Yo! its June already, half way through the year, time for the bedding plants and all those seeds that need it warmer and dont forget to thin those already shooting.
Lawns
The lawn is now growing quickly and should be mowed and trimmed regularly, once a week is recommended, dont worry it will slow down later and you can revert to fortnightly again.
You can help now by lowering the cutting height, and watering during dry spells, Also If you haven’t already had the opportunity, spring/summer lawn fertiliser can be applied to established lawns now.
New lawns must be watered at all times even when it rains making sure the roots have plenty of moisture.
Ponds
Keep an eye on your ponds for the algae build up, its easy to remove with a stick or rack, do leave it overnight on the side of the pond so all the creatures have a chance to escape back to the safety of the pond, then the algae is best placed onto the compost heap.
Greenhouse
Get ready to put your summer shades into place.
Do keep the plants in your greenhouse watered, tomatoes are best watered twice a day during the hot spells, once as the sun is rising and again when the sun has cooled off in the evening.
Strawberries
One of my favourite fruits, easy to grow and speads like wild flower.
they should just be going red now so keep an eye out for the pests, putting straw under the fruit will aid in their growth and in keeping most of the pest's away, the only answer I have for the birds is either netting or in my case plenty of cats.
do watch out for the free range chickens though as they love the colour red and last year ate all my fruit in two minute flat..hmmm! thought long and hard about having roast chicken and chicken stews that week, hmmm!
Chickens
They are probably the easiest of the creatures to keep, pellets are cheap and you can feed them nearly all your food waste.
Just make sure they can get access to your fruit and veg plots.
However the reward of a free range egg is fantastic, the taste is far better than anything you will shop buy, because it came from your own chickens!
I have four chickens two of which were rescue chickens, they have become great layers.
