MARCH

So here we are March is upon us again, the weather having been so diverse has really affected the plants, we would appear to be at least four weeks behind on the growing season, just look for the daffs, not to worry they will catch up.

Lawns:-

Yes it’s time to think about the lawns again, a fine sowing of seed with a mixture of sand and rich soil is always a good idea at this time of the month. The sand will aid in the eradication of moss and smaller weeds, whilst the seed will patch up the patches left behind when they die, the rich soil will feed the lawn area.  The loam needs to be spread over the whole lawn at around 2mm depth.

Towards the end of the month should it become drier, is an ideal time for planting new lawns, rid the ground of perennial weeds, ideally the ground should be dug out to a depth of around 250mm, then raked for a level surface, I add plenty of sand within the soil to aid drainage when the lawn has grown.

An established lawn has its first cut higher than normal, just taking the tips of so as to encourage thickness of growth.

Flower beds :-

Prepare the beds now ready for sowing, use a general fertiliser or good compost mix to turn into the soil, also sprinkle or place the mix around shrubs and along hedges edge.

A saying I always use :- Hedges, Edges Lawns....work in this order and you will not  go far wrong
