People have always given names to plants, However wilst travelling they noticed that the same plant was often titled a different name, therefore a common naming sytem was devised. The one used today is The Binomial System Which was established under the influence of an eighteenth-century Swedish botonist, Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) He used two words in Latin to classify plants the first was the name of the genus and the second the specific epithet (attribute, descriptive). Placing the naming in thus fashion allowed plants of the same genus (family) to be given different epithets ie Ilex aquifolium English (common) Holly or I. flavescens is Moonlight Holly
The Meaning of Plant Names The botanical naming of plants also allows us to gain knowledge of their meaning, some are commemorative or it may signify who brought it into cultivation, others tell the country of origin or it may just describe its pysical character. ie Fuchs from the plant Fuchsia is a tribute to a German Physician called Leonhart Fuchs Pelargos from the Greek meaning a stork for Pelargomium which tells us about its physical character |
