Most garden books are happy to tell you how to get rid of weeds in your garden. Sometimes, they name the weeds they're talking about, but they don't seem to be very keen to help you recognise them. Hope fully on this page you will find the help to recognise yours.

There are two types of weeds - annual and perennial. They're both troublesome. Annuals are a nuisance because they're designed to grow as fast as possible and complete their life-cycle in one year.  They can flower when they're small too, - less than an inch high, sometimes. So you should aim to get rid of annual weeds as soon as you spot their seedlings.

Perennial weeds are also a big nuisance. Often, they have long tap roots or root systems that cover several square feet, and they just keep on going, sending up shoots over large areas.

HOWEVER!      It's often said that a weed is just a flower in the wrong place.

With the current fashion for wildflower gardens, this has never been more true. A lot of people like some types of thistle,  Some people even want Nettles or Dandelions for herbal uses or for thier animals.

So the choice becomes yours after all its your garden.

 The Worst Weeds

Bindweed :- Field and Hedge are both extremely troublesome for the gardener. Field Bindweed roots can go to a depth of over 6m and also creep horizontally, producing plants as they go.

Hedge Bindweed roots are more shallow but the stems creep long distances above and below ground. It is possible to dig out, however every pice must be got as each piece is designed to grow a new plant.

We have found the best control is to use SBK, do read the instructions on the container. Then combined with regular weeding both Bindweeds can be controlled if not eradicated.

Brambles :- Old plants are the worst as they have deep woody roots, the stems root as they creep along the ground. To eradicate, cut back top growth and dig down to remove the woody root then apply Tumbleweed to the area. When regrowth appears treat the fresh leaves with Tumbleweed and repeat every 3-4 weeks or as directed on container.

Chickweed :- The seed from the chickweed plant have been known to survive for upto 40 years, in the soil and then germinate at anytime of year. If caught early these weeds are easily controlled with the hoe, however if established you may have to dig up the whole weed applying Tumbleweed as you go. Treat the area with a paraquat or diquat if available but do watch use near favoured plants. (weedol contains paraquat/diquat)

A preferance of mine is sodium Chlorate, however for some reason this product in its pure form has been removed from the market and you can only purchase in named brands at extra cost to the consumer.

Another product we recommend is Casoron G4 which is particularly effective around Trees and Shrubs.

Hairy Bittercress :- This plant can be easily cotrolled by hand weeding or hoeing, However if left to seed it will travel everywhere, the pods disperse the seeds with an explosion sending seeds in all direction, each plant can produce hundreds of seeds in a year.

Just your touch will make the pod burst, so if you see the plant pull it before it has a chance to set seed. Casoron G4 is extremely effective for this weed if it becomes persistant, a mulch or bark is often used to smother the weed.
